Message to Tasmanian Parliament on budget cuts and forestry
Letters to members of the Legislative Council – 17 August 2011
The Florentine Protection Society sent letters to all MLCs re the Intergovernmental Agreement: here it is (above), with MLC Ruth Forrest’s response (below). She completely ignores the fact that change in the forest industry was thanks to market forces and the industry’s subsequent realisation of the necessity for change. This happened in spite of all the efforts of government and Forestry Tas to maintain a fantasy world where our industry would be insulated from world-wide impacts, like a glut of pulp and cheaper operators, but still operate on the world market. FT’s increasingly creative financing and refusal to answer to parliamentary committees have been essential to maintain the fiction that the industry is profitable.
Unreal!

March 2010 Tasmanian election
In the run-up to the Tasmanian election in March, members of FPS tried to meet with candidates and also with sitting members of the Legislative Council, Tasmania’s upper house. We thought it important to ensure that the Legislative Council is also well briefed about the values of the Upper Florentine and our policy for its protection.
Independent MLC Paul Harriss and Liberal MLC Dr Vanessa Goodwin both gave us good hearings and asked questions about the Upper Florentine, the Florentine Protection Society and why we want the Upper Florentine protected.
Mr Harriss was familiar with the area and the issues, having participated in a parliamentary visit, and asked us a complex question about the views expressed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2008. We have since responded to Mr Harriss’ question in a letter.
Dr Goodwin, who became an MLC since the parliamentary visit, asked several questions about the Upper Florentine, including how big the area is that we are seeking to protect. We have since researched the answer and responded to her in a follow-up letter.
