Forest Coalition Join for Forest Vigil

Wednesday 4th May, noon-1pm, and each Wednesday till 15 June 2011
Executive Building,15 Murray St, Hobart.
A coalition of forest groups have joined together to conduct a peaceful forest vigil at Hobart’s executive building.  Huon Valley Environment Centre, The Wilderness Society, Still Wild Still Threatened, Code Green, West Wellington Protection Group and The Florentine Protection Society will take participate in a forest vigil each Wednesday at the executive building each week for the next eight weeks.
Jenny Weber, Huon Valley Environment Centre:
“Our peaceful gathering will be held for the next eight weeks to call for the urgent legislated protection of native forests in Tasmania.
Our forest vigil is a positive way to send a message to Premier Lara Giddings and all decision makers in the State Parliament that valuable native forests are being lost every day across Tasmania. The community and environment would benefit greatly from seeing Tasmania’s wild and ancient forests protected.”
Vica Bayley, The Wilderness Society:
“Conservation values need to permanently secured in formal reserves such as National Parks, protected by legislation.”
Lisa Searle, spokesperson for Code Green:
“We are here today to stand up for Tasmania’s native forests, and will continue to be a voice for these forests until the protection they deserve is given. These forests urgently need immediate protection before we lose them forever.”
Jo McRae, Florentine Protection Society:
“State forests are the people’s forests, so the people must have a say
in their future. And the people say they are too valuable to lose.”

Jo Quail electric cello concert

Stunning UK electric cello player, Jo Quail,  returned to Tasmania in January 2011 for a series of special concerts and recitals. Since her visit to the Upper Florentine a year ago, Jo is passionate about the Florentine and the campaign to save the Florentine forests, and she has composed a piece for the Florentine entitled “Tu Florentine”. She generously dedicated one of these concerts to raising funds for the Florentine Protection Society.

The attached flier has more information about Jo Quail’s music.

FLORENTINE PROTECTION SOCIETY POLICY

The Florentine Protection Society proposes that the Upper Florentine be added to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and to the Southwest National Park.

The Florentine Protection Society adopts in principle the boundary of the Upper Florentine as shown in “Western Tasmania: A Place of Outstanding Universal Value” by Geoff Law (2009), page 4, which would combine the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and Mt Field National Park as one protected entity.

The Florentine Protection Society therefore calls on the State Government to extend the Southwest National Park to incorporate the Upper Florentine and to support World Heritage nomination of the Upper Florentine.

The Florentine Protection Society also calls on the Federal Government to nominate the Upper Florentine as an extension to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

HOW TO VOTE FOR THE FLORENTINE

  • Read the Florentine Protection Society policy for the Upper Florentine (above)
  • Look at the policies of all candidates (political parties and independents) for your electorate, and see how they align or do not align with the FPS policy
  • Discuss the points made in our policy with any of the candidates you can contact – in person, by letter, or electronically
  • Select at least five candidates who have indicated they support our policy and vote for them (1 to 5, starting with 1 for your most favoured candidate ) – this is the minimum number of candidates you must vote for to return a valid vote – any fewer and your vote is invalid
  • If you can’t find five who support our policy issues, just identify who you think are the best five anyway!
  • Of course, you can always vote for more than five candidates – you can go right through to the end of the list!

Walk with the people this election – Walk Against Warming
Where: Parliament House Lawns, Hobart
When: 12 noon Sunday 15th August

Or: In Launceston, meet at Civic Square at 12 noon for a walk to the  Seaport, Home Point. Speakers to be announced, bring an umbrella.

This election – CUT EMISSIONS NOT FORESTS

Both major parties have failed the test on climate change this election  campaign and let you down. Julia Gillard wants to defer climate action  approval to a citizen think tank, while Tony Abbot has nothing that will  tackle big polluters.

In Tasmania, we know that protecting forests will deliver immediate climate change benefits. Protecting forests would secure the huge carbon stores contained in our forests and prevent the massive level of emissions created  by logging. We’d also reap the benefits of protecting water supplies, saving  habitat for wildlife and securing Tasmania’s clean, clever brand by leading the world on protecting nature as a climate initiative.

On Sunday August 15th, a week before the federal election, the Walk Against Warming will be calling on candidates to walk with the people, not the big
polluters.

Speakers at the Hobart event include:
Christine Milne -Greens Senate candidate and climate change spokesperson
James Risby- Climatologist
Peter Boyer – Climate Change commentator
Mel Barnes – Socialist Alliance candidate

Join the Walk and tell your politicians to look after your future. Tasmanian native forests are our perpetual carbon store.

This is the major campaign event being supported by the Florentine Protection Society, in partnership with the Tasmanian Wilderness Society, Tasmanian Climate Action and Environment Tasmania, so please come along. If you can help out on the day or help with promotion, please contact Contact Liz Johnstone of the Wilderness Society in Hobart on 6281 1930 or at liz.johnstone@wilderness.org.au and Ruth Groom in Launceston on 6331 7488 or at ruth.groom@wilderness.org.au

From the “Election” page:

Below are the two ads we are running at the moment. The first one is a rotating ad on Tasmanian Times (http://tasmaniantimes.com/index.php). You can see the second one at the State Cinema before every session.

As usual, any donations you want to make to cover our costs are most welcome (please go to the “Donate and Join” page).

Advertisement 27 February 2010

Below is a copy of the advertisement that appeared on Saturday, 27th February, in the Hobart Mercury. It is half a page in colour on page 15, a right-hand page.

We are appealing to all sympathetic fellow travelers to assist in paying for it.  It is envisaged that this is only the first and more ads will follow, plus other actions for the year ahead. But all this requires considerable financial support so we can achieve our main objective, saving the Upper Florentine Valley.

Any amount donated will be most welcome. Please continue on to our donation page.
